Press Release Spring 2014 - DHS, PHS among select group to offer inaugural AP Capstone courses

Dawson and Pearland high schools are among fewer than 150 schools worldwide currently chosen to participate in the roll-out of the Advanced Placement Capstone Program in fall 2014.

The AP Capstone Program -- developed based on feedback from college faculty and admission officers -- will help students develop skills critical for success in college inquiry, research, collaboration and writing while complementing the rigor of core AP courses and exams.

Students who complete the program will stand out during the college application process by demonstrating their commitment to challenging coursework and showcasing their in-depth understanding, interest and passion for specific issues.

The Capstone program includes a two-course sequence: AP Seminar and AP Research.

Designed for sophomores and juniors, AP Seminar (2014-15), will equip students to explore academic and real-world issues through an interdisciplinary lens and multiple viewpoints.

From articles and research studies to foundational and philosophical texts, students will explore complex questions, evaluate opposing views, interpret information and develop and defend their own views.

Teachers have the flexibility to choose themes based on student interests. In turn, students are assessed through individual and team projects completed during the year and through a year-end written exam.

The second course, AP Research (2015-16), will allow students to design and conduct a year-long mentored investigation on a topic of their choice.

Students will build on the skills learned in AP Seminar by using research methodology and ethical research practices and analyzing and synthesizing information to present and defend an argument.

Students who earn scores of 3 or higher on the AP Seminar and AP Research exams will earn an AP Seminar and Research Certificate. If they also earn scores of 3 or higher on four AP exams of their choice, they will earn the AP Capstone Diploma.
