April 6th, 2024, began the journey for a historical achievement for the Sports Medicine team at Glenda Dawson High School, where they achieved their 5th  Greater Houston Athletic Trainers’ Society (GHATS) regional championship and became the first ever back to back champions! No other school in the greater Houston region has won this title more the once! Victory at GHATS allowed for Glenda Dawson high school to qualify to defend their 2023 state title at the 2024 Texas State Athletic Trainers’ Association (TSATA) State Student Athletic Training Aid Competition at Tarleton State University.

Unlike other state competitions, athletic training competitions are not separated by student population divisions like UIL, meaning all schools competing against each other were not of the same size high school. The schools competing were also representing their own divisional regions dictated by the TSATA making a grand total of twenty seven qualifying schools within the state of Texas.

The state competition is comprised of two major competitions. The first competition is one that tests the student’s clinical skills comprised of three individual student skills and one team skill that needed to be demonstrated. points are awarded by a judge for how well the skill is executed. Dawson received the highest combined score to begin their state title defense. The second competition is an academic quiz bowl that tests the students’ knowledge and ability to quickly process information. The Quiz Bowl is similar to a “family feud” format where a question is read and either team can buzz in to answer the question correctly. Questions being asked can include such topics as biology, anatomy & physiology, nutrition, general medicine, and entry level exercise physiology. Dawson nearly had a perfect day only giving up one point to their opponents as they battled through 4 rounds of questioning.

Dawson Sports Medicine is the only program at Glenda Dawson High school to obtain a team state championship and are now back to back TSATA State Champions. Glenda Dawson High School is a prestigious campus with many athletic, academic, and fine arts successes awarding many state finalists and individual state champions, but a team state title has eluted the campus until 2023. The Glenda Dawson Student Athletic Training Aid Program defended their title with honor as they secured a back to back championship title. The State Championship team this year comprised of junior students Haile Pamoja, Laila Groves, Mustafa Madinawala, Maddie Locklear, and sophomore students Tatum Langley, Katie Roth, and Myla Jabbar. The team is highly educated and led by the award-winning athletic training staff, including two alumni from Glenda Dawson High School. Their staff is comprised of head athletic trainer Christina Fry class of 2012, team sponsor and assistant athletic trainer Joseph B. Eberhardt class of 2015, and assistant athletic trainer Thomas Patrey.
