Cosmetology
Are you interested in being in the Cosmetology program at San Jacinto College during the school day in your 11th and 12th Grade years? If so, please read the following information and if it sounds like something you are still interested in for your junior and senior year, please fill out the cosmetology field trip interest form.
General Info
Pearland ISD partners with San Jacinto College to offer our students participation in their Cosmetology program while students are still in high school. If you are accepted into the Cosmo program for the 2024-2025 school year, you would be dually enrolled at Dawson High School and San Jacinto College. You would start your day at Dawson for the first 5 periods of each school day, where you would take your core classes of English, Math, Science, Social Studies and one elective course. Then, you would take a shuttle bus or drive yourself to San Jacinto College South Campus off Beamer, where you will have two Cosmo classes daily that go from 1-4pm. There is a shuttle when the class is over that brings students back to Dawson High School, but there is not transportation home from San Jac, so parents must pick up students daily either at San Jacinto College or from Dawson HS if they bus back to Dawson.
Cost
You would pay tuition for the San Jac Cosmo classes and buy your hair kit. The kit costs about $1000 and you would have to pay tuition directly to San Jac for two courses in 11th Grade and two more courses in 12th Grade to complete the program. Contact San Jacinto College Cosmo program advisors for more information about the investment required. Cosmo License
If you are in the program for two years in 11th and 12th Grade, you can earn your Cosmetology license upon completion of the program and you could graduate high school as a licensed cosmetologist if you complete both the 11th and 12th Grade Cosmo 1 and 2 courses.
Do I Qualify to be in the Cosmo program?
Talk with your Dawson School Counselor to see if you have fulfilled your credits in 9th and 10th Grade to be a candidate for the Cosmo program. Typically, students that can participate in the Cosmo program if they have already finished their one year of pe, two years of foreign language and one year of fine art required for graduation. Seats are limited district-wide and it is not guaranteed that students will be accepted into the program. If there is more interest than spots available, entrance into the program will go to a lottery system, ran by the district. If you participate in band, sports or any program that has practice after school or requires you be in a period in 6th or 7th period, you would not be able to be in the Cosmo program.
We do take a group of students to tour San Jac, typically in February each year. If you are interested, please see Monica Rizqi or Dr. Schlitzberger in the Counseling Office.
